Team Blitz had an outing to remember after the Monaco Diamond League, emerging tops to win Day 11 of the fantasy Diamond race contest in the very competitive MoC League.

To further buttress how strong the MoC league has been in the last 10 outings, no team has been able to win two successive meets on the bounce, with Team Blitz being the 11th new winner this season.

By the way in case you don’t know who is behind Team Blitz, it is owned by MoC’s Jerry Jakpa who surely had a memorable July to savour, being the first time he competed at the Nigerian senior trials where he won Bronze in the men’s 200m, maybe you can say he is as good on the track as he is off it going by his choice of athletes in Monaco.

So, it could be that Team Blitz was buoyed by that Abuja feat, going into the Monaco fantasy contest with such good form that saw him amass a total of 210 points, 8points more than his closest challengers.

The meeting Herculis was so significant even before it was done, because it was first time this season as well as the last time ever that Usain Bolt competed in the Diamond League.

However, did that sway many people to pick Bolt in their fantasy teams? Not really. Although many picked him as a member of the 9-man team, he wasn’t really picked as the captain, mainly because people were chasing Meeting Records (MR), and they weren’t sure the Jamaican would guarantee that.

Two South Africans, Caster Semenya and Wayde Van Niekerk accounted for two of the four MRs from Monaco, and those lucky enough to pick either of the athletes got an enviable 60 points to show for it.

How the teams fared in the Monaco Diamond Race contest

Mariya Lasitskene and Hellen Obiri were the other two athletes with MRs, and the teams who chose all four of them with one as captain, that’s some cool 150 points from just four athletes. This was where Blitz got his ascendancy that shot him up to the top.

Meanwhile, Jacob Ikponwomsa (WeRun team) and Sunday Saviour’s team are the two teams tied in 2nd place after both got identical points. Which means that there is no 3rd place as the 2nd place teams will now share the same amount of airtime.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
