10) Tega Odele

One of the success stories of the National Championships, Odele, had to upset the applecart to join the Nigerian Athletics elite. In Warri, he stormed to an unexpected victory in the 200m, beating the likes of Obinna Metu and Egwero to win the national title, running a PB of 20.47s.

He was the only male sprinter Nigeria fielded at the World Championships, where he competed in the first round of the men’s 200m.

However he had a better outing in Brazzaville, running another PB of 20.45s en-route winning Bronze in the men’s 200m in 20.58s, with his friend and compatriot Divine Oduduru winning Silver in 20.45s as Ivory Coast’s Hua Koffi Wilfried took GOLD in 20.42s.

It hasn’t been an easy 2015 for the University of Benin graduate, participating at the World University Games in Korea despite arriving after his events had ended; he was only able to compete in the 4x100m where the team finished 5th with a time of 40.45s.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
