9) Ogho-Oghene Egwero

Former 100m national champion Egwero makes it into ninth spot in our ranking. He might have had a mixed National Championship after being beaten to 1st place by Ogunlewe, and had to settle for 2nd position; however he won his first individual medal for Nigeria in Brazzaville, clinching Silver in the men’s 100m.

He equalled his PB of 10.06s in the semifinal in Brazzaville, which is the fastest time done by a Nigerian his year. Incidentally, he posted the mark for the first time at the 2011 African Games in Maputo.

It is interesting to note: during his interview with us in Brazzaville, he explained to the Director General of the Sports Commission that he was able win something because he was implored to forego the World Championships in order to focus and train for the African Games.

Egwero is ranked at 44th on the IAAF 2015 Top list, and finished 2nd at the National Championships in Warri.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
