7) Doreen Amata

Current women’s High Jump National Record (NR) holder, Amata is at No. 7 in our ranking. She is ranked 13th on the IAAF 2015 top list with a mark of 1.94m that she achieved at a World Challenge meet in Dakar, Senegal.

Amata was at the World Championships this year, and was one of only five athletes to clear every single qualifying distance – 1.80, 1.85, 1.89 and 1.92m at the first time of asking in the first round. Although she didn’t finish in the medal zone, Amata made sure Nigeria had a representation in the final, being one of the 13 finalists.

She competed in Brazzaville, but missed out on making it a third consecutive title, finishing 2nd to take Silver with a clearance of 1.85m, with Seychelles’ Lissa Labiche winning GOLD after clearing 1.91m.

Amata will look back to the season and see it as somewhat fulfilling, having gotten an endorsement deal from sportswear company Adidas. At least there will be grants to aid her training programmes.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
