4. See what happens when Usain Bolt walks in midway through Nigerian Athlete being interviewed!
Not everyone has the opportunity of rubbing shoulders with the world’s fastest man, but that’s what happened to Nigeria’s Odele Tega, when Usain Bolt walked in while he was being interviewed by our reporter. Three videos capture the before, during and after moments of Bolt’s arrival and have garnered 22,500 views combined!
In the first video, which is before Bolt’s arrival, Tega is telling us about his career transformation, starting out as a Benin boy who is now competing in Beijing. Interestingly, Tega was Nigeria’s sole male representative in the sprints at the World Championships.
Bolt walks in during the interview, and Tega must be commended for maintaining his focus despite having the star right beside him in the mixed zone. Of course the journalists get distracted as they each want to get comments from the ‘Big Guy’ himself!
In this last video, the Nigerian champion is gracious enough to continue the interview and actually goes philosophical when asked about rubbing shoulders with Bolt:“As much as they are stars, we are able to know that they started from the level where we are starting today. And if we are also racing with them, it shows that we are making progress in what we are doing”.
The World Championships experience paid off for Tega as he went on to win Bronze at his first African Games outing where he also bettered his Personal Best (PB) to 20.45s.
