It was a great outing for Nigeria’s Euphemia Edem who emerged victorious in the Women’s Long Jump event at the Joe Gillespie Invitational in Stephenville, Texas in the USA.

Edem leapt to a windy 6.50m (+4.2) mark, beating Diamond Williams who finished 2nd with 5.67m and Adrine Monagi who was 3rd, jumping her best distance of 5.59m.

Just once in her five attempts did Edem go below 6m, and it was in her first jump, recording 5.91m. She drew a foul in her 2nd attempt, but improved from her 3rd attempt to the last one where she got her best mark of 6.50m.

Last year, Edem started brightly in the season and looked like she would make the Nigerian team to international championships, but a disappointing outing at the National Trials stopped her from making the team after finishing 4th in 5.92m.

With the likes of Commonwealth Games Champion, Ese Brume and young Ruth Usoro who stunned everybody to win Bronze in Warri last year to contend with, Edem will be hoping to put in better performances if she is to outperform them this year.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
