3. TOSIN OKE
Before the Nigerian Trials, we wrote on former National Triple Jump Champion Tosin Oke, spear-heading one of the top notch events to be competed in Sapele. Unfortunately, he didn’t make the trip down, giving room for African Games Silver medallist, Olumide Olamigoke to clinch his first National Title.
Oke has been the country’s most consistent male athlete at international level for the past four years, and recently reclaimed his continental title from South Africa’s Khotso Mokoena on his home turf in Durban, making it his third title at the African Championships.
Oke will be going to Brazil as the 12th best Triple Jumper in the world this year, with a Season’s Best (SB) of 17.13m, and won’t be a push over, considering that he has been somewhat consistent in his build-up to the Olympics, using the IAAF Diamond League as practice for the Rio Games.
This will be Oke’s second outing at the Olympics, the first being London 2012 where he finished 7th in the finals with a distance of 16.95m. The 35 year old will be aiming for a higher placement this time around, a new PB and National Record (NR), so as to end his Olympics career on a high.
