9. ASBEL KIPROP
In recent years, no one has been as dominant in the men’s 1500m as Kenya’s 1500m Record holder, Asbel Kiprop who has gone from being a 12th place finisher at London 2012 Olympic Games, to ruling his event in the past four years, both at global competitions and on the Diamond League scene.
The Diamond Race Leader currently has two of the Top 5 fastest times in history. The first he achieved in 2013, where he won the Monaco Diamond League in 3:27.72, making him the fourth fastest man ever, while the second was at the same venue in 2015, where he clocked a faster time of 3:26.69s, to put him 3rd on the all-time list.
This year, Kiprop sits on top of the world list with an SB of 3:29.33, and is the only man to have gone under the 3:30s. Interestingly in his last build up race before Rio, he was relegated to 6th position in Monaco, same venue where he recorded his two fastest times, thereby throwing the Rio Olympics 1500m crown open.
Olympic Champion Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi will be on his tail, aiming to defend his title; not forgetting his countrymen Ronald Kwemoi and Elijah Manangoi, who are also top medal contenders.
One thing will be going on in the mind of Athletics faithfuls when the starter’s gun cocks; can the World Champion regain his Olympic title from Beijing 2008?
