7. HYVIN KIYENG

Finally we are half way through our countdown, and what better athlete can occupy this position than one who has one of the brightest chances of attacking the World Record (WR), Hyvin Kiyeng.

The World Champion alongside Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet, produced one of the greatest performances in Steeplechase history at the Eugene Diamond League, where they both clocked the second and third fastest times ever.

Although Jebet was victorious clocking 8:59.96, thereby becoming the second woman in history to go under the 9 minutes mark, Kiyeng was at close breath stopping the time at 9:00.01, which was a new African Record.

The WR stands at 8:58.81 set by Russia’s Gulnara Galkina at Beijing 2008, and with both women coming close to the mark in Eugene, the Olympic arena in Rio might just be another perfect venue for the WR to go down just as it did in 2008.
