It’s still raining World Records (WR) at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and it was the turn of Poland’s Anita Wlodarcyzk to inscribe her name in the annals of history on Day 4 of Track and Field in Brazil.
The reigning World Champion in the women’s Hammer throw shattered her former WR of 81.08m to set a new record of 82.29m at the Olympic Stadium, making it the fifth WR of her career.
Meanwhile the WR holder in the men’s 800m, David Rudisha successfully defended his title from London 2012, becoming only the second man in history to achieve this feat.
London 2012 GOLD medallist in the 200m, Allyson Felix lost out in her bid to win an Olympic 400m title, after Bahamian Shaunae Miller won the race in a Personal Best (PB) of 49.44s.
Another upset occurred in the men’s Pole vault where Brazil’s Thiago Braz da Silva upstaged WR holder Renaud Lavillenie to win the Olympic title.
Bahrain’s Ruth Jebet emerged winner in the battle for supremacy in the women’s 3000m Steeplechase, winning her first Olympic GOLD medal with one of the best performances in history.
The women’s 200m heats commenced on Monday, with most of the top names qualifying for Tuesday’s semis. Top athletes like Dafne Schippers, Elaine Thompson, Tori Bowie and Blessing Okagbare all made it past the heats, apart from two-time champion over the distance, Veronica Campbell-Brown who didn’t advance to the next round.
