Brazzaville 2015, Rio 2016 Olympics
Ese Brume will be hoping to have her smile back this year.

Nigeria’s Ese Brume has qualified for the final of the women’s Long Jump taking place on Wednesday at the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics.

Although she did not jump the automatic qualification mark of 6.75m, Brume was able to qualify after finished 3rd in group B going her best distance of 6.67m in her second attempt.

Brume who recently won GOLD at the 2016 African Championships in Durban, will be making her second appearance in a major final not on the continent since she won at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Brittney Reese who qualified with just her very first attempt of 6.78m will no doubt be the favourite to retain her Olympic title, but she will be wary of the threat of Ivana Spanovic who won group A with 6.87m.

Tianna Bartoletta, Lorraine Ugen are some of the big names that also qualified for the final, but surprisingly 2015 world Silver medallist, Shara Proctor did not qualify for the final. Proctor’s best mark on the day was 6.34m which was not enough to get her through.

With Nigeria’s Brume getting into the top 12, she would fancy her chances and will definitely need to get to or even surpass her Personal Best of 6.83m if she is to medal in the final

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
