Elaine Thompson has won the double after racing to a World Leading (WL) time of 21.78s to win the women’s 200m at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Dafne Schippers was the overwhelming favourite to win the race as she is considered the best over that distance, but Thompson held on dearly to stun her Dutch counterpart, not giving her room to come back in the race. Schippers settled for Silver in 21.88s and Tori Bowie Bronze in 22.13s.

Just four days after winning the 100m, Thompson has now won her second GOLD  of the Olympics and is in a position to win a third in the 4x100m relays.

Thompson ran a very good race, never allowing Schippers back in the race as she is a good finisher, and immediately she came out of the bend she bolted all the way to the finish line. It’s a swap from last year that Thompson finished 2nd behind Schippers who with the third best time ever in Beijing, and the Jamaican will be delighted yet again dominating her counterpart.

Interestingly, Thompson had not gone under 22s this year, whilst Schippers has the three of the five best times in 2016 which made her the favourite.

Sadly for Marie Josee Ta Lou, she missed out on the podium after finishing 4th with a new Ivory Coast National Record of 22.21s. Ta Lou narrowly missed out on winning Bronze in the 100m, but she will be consoled knowing that she’s up their with the best sprinters in the world.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
