Flora Ugwunwa ensured that Nigeria maintained its 9th spot on the medals table by winning the country’s only medal on Day 6 of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil, a GOLD medal in the women’s F54 Javelin throw.

Ugwunwa smashed the World and Paralympic Records to set a new record of 20.25m on Tuesday, winning Track and Field’s second medal at the Rio Games.

It was a competition to forget for Opeyemi Jegede who competed in the men’s Powerlifting -88kg class at the Riocentro Pavilion 2.

Jegede’s first and second attempts (192kg and 200kg) were successful. However he failed in his bid to lift 215kg, finishing in 5th position behind UAE’s Mohammed Khalaf (220kg), Brazil’s Evanio Da Silva (210kg) and Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar (210kg).

Nigeria’s third competitor of the day, Abdulazeez Ibrahim who competed in the Men’s -97kg in Powerlifting also missed out on a medal after placing 6th with 215kg, having suffered from an injury during competition.

Nigeria still occupies 9th position on the medals table with seven GOLD, two Silver and a Bronze medal.
