10. Seye Ogunlewe
The 2016 Athletics season can be termed as one of the most successful, if not the most successful season of Seye Ogunlewe’s career.
The 25-year old made known his intention of having a successful Olympic year when he ran a Personal Best (PB) of 10.18s at the IAAF World Challenge meet in Madrid.
Few weeks later, in a race against time to meet the Olympic qualifying mark and also defend his National title, Ogunlewe achieved both on a memorable note, clocking a new PB of 10.12s to emerge Nigeria’s fastest man for the second consecutive year, thereby sealing his spot at his first Olympic Games.
In Rio, the National Champion didn’t enjoy the best of Olympic debuts as he was unable to go beyond the heats after placing 4th in 10.26s. Though his failure to progress to the semis might be a little bit disappointing, solace can be taken in the fact the lessons learnt will serve as a huge motivation for his rising career.
Outside the track, Ogunlewe also added another feather to his cap, this time in his academics where he bagged a Double Honors Degree in Law and Politics, LL.B from University of Essex, UK.
