2. Women’s Hammer Throw/Anita Wlodarczyk

There are a few things constant in life: death, taxes and Anita Wlodarczyk breaking her own World Record (WR). Okay maybe we are being too cheeky, but we’re sure you get the point.

It just goes to show how much Wlodarczyk has taken it upon herself to step out of the norm, pushing herself to the maximum and further raising the bar in the Hammer throw.

Her dominance is such that she has set nothing less than six WRs in her career, and it only looks like a matter of time before the next WR comes in like a regular monthly salary. In fact, she owns all of the Top 10 marks in the world in 2016. Talk about being one-sided!

Wlodarczyk successfully claimed the Olympic title in Rio, and had to do it with a then WR mark of 82.29m. Just 13 days after, she felt the need to improve that mark, going on to set a new one of 82.98m at the Skolimowska Memorial in her homeland, just a little shy of 83m.

The Polish thrower had an outstanding 2016, which saw her make the Top 3 list of the Female Athlete of the Year Award.  It’s hard not to recognize the excitement she brings to a field event that is gradually gaining popularity.

If she could throw 82.98m in 2016, then be rest assured that a distance over 83m beckons in 2017.

Do you know that Wlodarczyk is the first woman in history to throw the Hammer over 80m, and currently holds 9 of the all-time best marks in the event?

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources. Formerly the Content Manager-Sports at Ringier media Nigeria, Chris is a Senior Sports writer, Photographer & Community manager at Making of Champions.
