Respite might have come the way of Nigerian athletes clamoring for competitions, following the announcement by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) that there would be an AFN/Dynamic Sporting Solutions Track and Field meet slated for next weekend in Abuja.
So far this year, there has been only one competition held in the country, the All Comers meet which took place at the University of Port Harcourt in April, and with the latest development the Nigerian Athletics season may have just begun.
Secretary of the AFN, Amechi Akawo in a memo called for clubs to register for the meet which will take place on June 3rd at the Package B, National Stadium Abuja, with the initial 2nd All Comers meet billed for June 10-11, 2017 seems to now be on hold.
There will be ranging events from the sprints to the Hurdles and the middle/long distances races, as well as some field events.
Athletes who finish on the podium will get prize rewards: N30, 000 for 1st place, N20,000 (2nd) and N10,000 (3rd), with the 4th place finisher getting N5,000.
With a new board going to be elected on June 13, this competition in Abuja will afford athletes an opportunity to ascertain their fitness levels for the season, not having to wait for the new board to resume duties before they start preparing for the season.
