Abraham Ibironke’s team on winning the Birmingham Diamond Race competition, has now become the first to win two meets this year in the MoC League.

Having tied with Lawal’s Team to jointly finish first in the Paris Diamond League, Ibironke’s team was the clear winner in Birmingham where he amassed a score of 173 points.

It was 8 points better than Nicholas Akinniyi’s team who finished 2nd with 165 points while Cheetah’s team (Edwin Peter) who has been coming close to the top three since the start of the season, finished 3rd with 155 points.

Birmingham was very significant for the fantasy players as the meet came just a week after the 2017 World Championships held in London. All the various teams had an idea of who to select based on what they had seen at the World Champs as they aimed for points in the home straight of the Diamond race contest.

However, it didn’t really go to plan for most people who chose Hellen Obiri as their captain. Would you blame people who did, seeing how the Kenyan defeated Almaz Ayana to win the 5000m world title.

Obiri was in the form to run a Meeting Record (MR) which would have been 60 points, but having finished 3rd in the women’s 3000m, those who chose her as captain got only 14 points. Not many gave Sifan Hassan a chance, and the Dutch athlete went on to set a new National Record (NR), Personal Best (PB) and MR.

How the teams fared after the Birmingham Diamond League

Mutaz Barshim was another outstanding performer, jumping a World Lead and MR of 2.40m to win the men’s High Jump. At least if Obiri’s 3rd place finish robbed you of valuable points, Barshim assuaged for that with 30 points.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
