Two years after giving birth to her son, Zyon, Jamaica’s Shelly Ann- Fraser-Pryce came back to claim her 4th 100m World Title, blazing past the field in emphatic fashion to win with a World Leading (WL) time of 10.71s.
The women’s 100m was so fast that, Dina Asher-Smith who finished 2nd in the race, ran a British Record of 10.83s to get the Silver. Marie Josee Ta Lou had to settle for 3rd place with a time of 10.90s.
Fraser-Pryce had served up what to expect from her, when in the heats she easily jogged to a time of 10.80s to secure victory. She went on to run an easy 10.81s to win her semifinal heat, and from then it was hard seeing beyond her winning the title.
The 33-year-old matched the hype with action in the final, getting her trademark bullet start and never eased off, opening a big gap that she was never in danger of relinquishing to take the victory.
Elaine Thompson finished 4th in the race with a time of 10.93s, almost pushing off Ta Lou from a podium placement, but the latter held on strongly to nick it. Murielle Ahoure who’s just recovering from an injury, having withdrawn from the African Games last month, ran a Season’s Best of 11.02s to finish 5th.
With this kind of form, Fraser-Pryce is undoubtedly the favourite to win the women’s 100m Olympics title in Tokyo next year. If the Jamaican manages to pull it off, not only will she be winning her third Olympic Games title, she will be doing so at the age of 34.
