Two years after he crashed out in the semi-finals at the World Championships in London, finishing a disappointing seventh in 1:46.27,Donavan Brazier produced one of the most dominant 800m performances in World Championships history to claim his maiden title in Doha.
The American has been in blistering form this season, wining the IAAF Diamond League early last month, but his performance in Doha throws him into the contention as one of the all time greats.
Regardless of some big names like Emmanuel Korir, defending champion Pierre-Ambroise Bosse and Adam Kszczot bowing out in the semis, Brazier was still able to scorch to a new Championship Record (CR) of 1:42.34, having led by some metres at the bell.
His wining time catapults him into 9th in the all time standings of the men’s 800m, and still at the age of 22, he certainly is one to watch out for going into the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Behind him, 2015 World Bronze medallist Amel Tuka of Bosnia and Herzegovina clinched Silver this time around in a Season’s Best (SB) of 1:43.47, with Kenya’s Ferguson Rotich taking the Bronze in 1:43.82s.
