Team Nigeria put down fabulous performances on Day 9 of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, competing across a range of events that included the women’s 100m hurdles, Long Jump, 4x100m relay and breaking two (2) African Records in the process!
Tobi Amusan opened up her World Championships campaign on a great note, powering to a new African Record (AR) of 12.40s for a thorough win in heat 3 of the women’s 100m hurdles, well ahead of former World Champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica in 12.87s.
On the field, Ruth Usoro and Ese Brume took to the runway for the women’s Long Jump qualification, leaving it late but punching their tickets to the final on their last attempts! Brume produced a big 6.82m, the third best across the two qualification pools for an automatic spot while Usoro who had one hand on a spot in the finals, successfully sailed through with 6.69m.
Nigeria ended Day 9 with a flourish as the women’s 4x100m quartet of Joy Udo-Gabriel, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha put up a spirited performance, storming to a new African Record of 42.22s!
They smashed the previous record of 42.37s set 30 years ago by the team of Beatrice Utondu, Faith Idehen, Mary Onyali and Christy Opara, just missing out on a podium placement by one place.
