It was yet another brilliant performance from the Nigerian contingent on Day 4 of the ongoing African Games in Accra, Ghana, as more medals rained, especially GOLD, which increased their medal tally from the previous day by 15!
Nigerian Weightlifters were the sole contributors to Team Nigeria’s 9 GOLD won on Monday: Edidiong Joseph Umoafia, Folashade Lawal, and Adijat Olarinoye won three GOLD medals apiece in their various categories.
Umofia won the men’s 67kg with an overall weight of 300kg, Clean and Jerk (165kg), and Snatch (135kg); Lawal won the women’s 59kg category with a total lift of 190kg, Clean and Jerk (105kg), and Snatch (85kg) while Olarinoye took charge of the women’s 55kg category with a combined mass of 185kg, Clean and Jerk (105kg), and Snatch (80kg).
Over to Wrestling, Ashton Adeyemi-Amin Mutuwa got Silver in the men’s 125kg freestyle after losing to Egypt’s Youssif Mohammed 4-0; Simeon Enozunimi also got Silver in men’s 57kg freestyle after a tough encounter with Egypt’s Gamal Abdelnasser Mohamed who narrowly won by 7-4.
In the men’s 65kg freestyle, Nigeria’s Simon Stephen Izolo won Silver, losing to Egypt’s Mourad Omar who won by 10-0. Harrison Onovwiomogbohwo was awarded the Bronze medal in the men’s 86kg freestyle, after his Algerian opponent, Fateh Benferdjalla failed to show up for their 3rd place match.
In Chess, Peace Samson won Bronze in the women’s Blitz Individual, while Nigeria came away with another Bronze in the Mixed Team Blitz.
Team Nigeria leapfrogs to the 2nd spot on the medal table with 16 GOLD, 10 Silver, and 15 Bronze.
