The resilience and consistency of Team Nigeria continued on the fifth day of competition as a total of 8 medals were accumulated, 6 GOLD and 2 Bronze, allowing the country to still lockdown its 2nd place with 48 medals in total (22 GOLD, 10 Silver, and 16 Bronze).

The Weightlifting squad resumed with their electrifying performance, winning 6 GOLD medals courtesy of Ruth Ayodele and Joy Eze. The duo both dominated their classes—64kg and 71kg—by earning 3 GOLD medals each.
The former carried a total of weight 208kg; Snatch (94kg); Clean and Jerk (114kg), while the latter lifted a total of 207kg; Snatch (90kg); Clean and Jerk (117kg).

Nigeria won her first medal in Swimming and Judo as the men’s 4×100m Freestyle relay quartet, which comprises Collins Ebingha, Clinton Opute, Abduljabar Adama, and Tobi Sijuade took the Bronze medal in 3:26.01 behind South Africa (3:23.86) and Egypt (3:25.43).
Franca Audu claimed Nigeria’s first Judo medal of the Games, a Bronze in the women’s 52kg category after defeating Sarah Sylva Rioux of Mauritius.

The Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) made its debut at the African Games in Accra and was competed in as a demonstration sport. The MMA would have added more laurels for Nigeria if it was a scoring sport at the Games as Team Nigeria dominated with a total of 12 medals. Although these medals will not reflect on the country’s overall standings in Accra, this is however a good foundation to prepare for the next edition of the Games taking place in Egypt.
