The 400m heats concluded on Day 1 of the 2024 African Athletics Championships with Nigeria’s quartermile quartet of Chidi Okezie, Dubem Amene, Samuel Ogazi and Esther Elo Joseph all sailing through to the semi finals.

African Games Champion, Chidi Okezie came from behind to take his heat in 46.13s over Kenya’s Boniface Mweresa (46.32s). National Champion, Dubem Aneme won Heat 3 in 46.13s ahead of Adrian Swart (46.17s) while Samuel Ogazi didn’t break a sweat as he finished 2nd in Heat 3 in 46.56 behind Rotich Kipkorir (46.13s)

Esther Elo Joseph was Nigeria’s sole entrant in the women’s 400m. The African Games Silver medallist placed 3rd in her heat with a time of 52.86s to qualify for the semis behind Zambia’s duo of Qincy Malekani (52.31) and Rhoda Njobvu (52.39).
