The duo of Samuel Ogazi and Esther Elo Joseph started Nigeria’s medal campaign on Day 3 of the 2024 African Athletics Championships in Douala by racing to Bronze medals in the men’s and women’s 400m respectively.

Nigeria fastest male quartermiler in 2024, Ogazi, dashed to a time of 45.47s to win the Bronze medal, continuing the Bronze medal-winning affair in the event for Team Nigeria in three of the last four editions of the African Championships. Chidi Okezie is responsible for the other two Bronze medals won in Durban 2016 and Asaba 2018 respectively.

Senegal’s Chiekh Tidiana Diouf struck GOLD in 45.23s while Botswana’s Lee Eppie got the Silver medal in 45.39s. Compatriot, Dubem Aneme placed 7th in 46.27s.

African Games multiple medalist, Esther Elo Joseph took the Bronze in the women’s 400m with a time of 51.94s, becoming the latest Nigerian female quartermiler to medal since Yinka Ajayi’s Bronze in Asaba 2018.

Miranda Coetzee continued her fine form from the previous day as she defended her title in 51.16s ahead of Qincy Malekani who took Silver in 51.56s.
