Team Nigeria concluded Day 6 of the 2024 African Athletics Championships in Douala with two medals from their participation in four events, taking their overall medal count in the competition to five GOLD, five Silver and four Bronze medals.

The highlight of the day was the women’s 4x400m relay where Nigeria secured a GOLD medal in the final. The team, consisting of Ella Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon-George, Esther Elo Joseph and Omolara Ogunmakinju achieved victory in the with a time of 3:27.31 to reclaim their title from South Africa who won the event two years ago in Mauritius.

Nigeria defeated Botswana and Zambia. However, their time fell short of their qualification target for the Olympics as they needed to run faster than 3:26.08 to surpass Cuba who currently occupy the 16th position on the World Relays ranking. 

In the men’s event, the Nigerian squad comprising Emmanuel Ojeli, Sikiru Adeyemi, Dubem Nwachukwu and Samuel Ogazi narrowly missed out on a medal in 4th place with a time of 3:02.93.

Chinecherem Nnamdi concluded Team Nigeria’s participation in Douala by winning a Silver medal in the men’s javelin throw. He achieved a best throw of 79.22m to finish behind Kenya’s Julius Yego.

Meanwhile, two-time National 200m Champion Alaba Akintola secured 6th position in the men’s 200m final in at 21.02s.
