Nigeria’s Kayode Alabi advanced to the quarterfinals of the Men’s Singles Para-Table Tennis Class 6 competition in an exhilarating Round of 16 match against his opponent from Romania, Bobi Simion at the Paris Paralympic Games.
The match was a thrilling display of table tennis prowess, with each game showcasing Alabi’s strategic brilliance and tenacity, winning the first game in 18-16. Although Simion levelled the game in the second set in 7-11, that didn’t stop the Nigerian as he quickly adjusted his tactics and refocused his energy.
His performance in the subsequent games was a testament to his adaptability and mental fortitude. He won the third game 11-5, and exhibited remarkable determination to clinch the fourth game 11-9, securing the overall match with a 3-1 victory.
His compatriot, Isau Ogunkunle also made it through to the quarterfinals after staging a remarkable comeback against world No. 3, Abdullah Ozturk from Turkey despite losing the first game 6-11. The Nigerian went on to dominate the remaining sets in 11-6, 11-7, and 12-10 in the Men’s Class 4.
Bolawa Akingbemisilu put up a spirited effort in the Men’s Class 5 category but was narrowly defeated 3-2 (11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-8) by Brazil’s Lucas Arabian.
For the quarterfinal ties, Ogunkunle will lock horns against France’s Maxime Thomas while Alabi will confront Thailand’s Rungroj Thainiyom tomorrow.
