Germany had a Day 2 to remember at the ongoing World Junior under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, winning two GOLDs to go top of the medal table, slightly ahead of the host country who are in 2nd position.
In the women’s Shot Put, Alina Kenzel showed why she is the highest ranked athlete in the under-20 category, winning GOLD for her country to lead off the double GOLD medals won by the Germans.
Kenzel with her third attempt threw an under -20 World Lead of 17.58m, the farthest by any athlete at that level this year. Coming to the Championships she had the two best marks, and after her recent feat, the German now holds all the top three marks in the world this season.
Meanwhile China’s Jiayuan Song threw a Personal Best (PB) to win Silver with a mark of 16.36m, and USA’s Alysaa Wilson taking Bronze with a mark of 16.33m.
Germany got it’s 2nd GOLD of the competition through Niklas Kaul who after two grueling days of competitions did a Championship and World under-20 Record of 8162 points to win the Decathlon.
Competing in his last event on the back of nine others since day 1, Kaul ran a PB of 4:21.70 in the 1500m, finishing 2nd to all but secure the win.
Maksim Andraloits did a Belarusian under-20 record of 8046 points to win Silver and Estonia’s Johannes Erm also doing a national record to take Bronze with 7879 points.
In men’s Long Jump, Maykel Masso was the only athlete to attain 8m, with his exact 8.00m good enough to secure the Cuban victory on the night. Greece’s Miltiádis Tentoglou finished 2nd with 7.91m and Darcy Roper 3rd with a mark of 7.88m.
Competing in front of her home crowd, Klaudia Maruszewska was spurred on, enough for her to land the leading mark of 57.49m in her very first attempt, which incidentally was a PB for the Polish Javelin thrower.
She held on to that lead and was able to land her country’s second GOLD of the competition, following in the paths of Konrad Bukoweicki who the men’s Shot Put event.
South Africa’s Jo-Ane Van Dyk with her 3rd attempt got into a medal contention mark, landing the spear at a new PB of 57.32m to win Silver, with Turkey’s Eda Tugsuz taking Bronze with 56.71m
