Jamaican teenager Jaheel Hyde successfully defended his title in the 400m Hurdles on Day 5 of the IAAF U20 World Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, powering to GOLD in an impressive time of 49.03s at the Zawisza Stadium.

The 19-year old was initially challenged by Kyron McMaster, but then he eventually took control of the race to cross the finishing line ahead of USA’s Taylor McLaughlin who was 2nd with a Personal Best (PB) of 49.45s, while McMaster placed 3rd in a National U20 Record of 49.56s.

Hyde clocked a time of 49.29s to win the title in Oregon two years ago, and also won the 110 Hurdles at the Youth Olympic Games the same year. Prior to that, he won GOLD at the 2013 Youth Championships in Donetsk, returning a time of 13.13s to claim victory in the event.

He set a PB of 48.81s in Kingston earlier this month and will be making his debut at the Olympics next month, joining compatriots Roxroy Cato and Romel Lewis in the 400m Hurdles. Annsert Whyte will be on reserve.
