Zambia’s promising youngster, Sydney Siame is gradually living up to the hype, with the 19-year old storming to a World Leading (WL) time of 9.87s to win the men’s 100m at the All Comers Meet held on Sunday in Lusaka.
It was a show of intent from Siame who further underlined the immense potential he had displayed since winning the Youth Olympics GOLD three years ago in Nanjing, and now he has set a new National Record (NR), eclipsing his previous Personal Best of 10.18s.
By so doing, Siame has now qualified for the World Championships in London which will be his second appearance at the biennial event, having debuted in Beijing two years ago.
Only South African duo of Akani Simbine and Thando Roto have gone under 10s in 2017, with the former thrice running times of 9.98s, 9.93s and a Season’s Best of 9.92s.
If Siame keeps up this performance and improves more in the cause of the season, he could be a very strong challenger for a podium placement in London.
Meanwhile, Siame is not the only Zambian to have qualified for the World Championships, 400m African champion Kabange Mupopo has qualified for the women’s 200m.
Mupopo who’s forte is the quarter-mile, ran a time of 23.03s, meeting the qualifying standard of 23.10s. It is yet to be seen if Mupopo would want to compete in both events in London.
