Nigeria claimed a haul of nine Track and Field medals at the 2006 edition of the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia. They comprised of two GOLD, four Silver and three Bronze medals.
It is interesting to note that the two GOLD medals won in Melbourne, came from physically challenged athletes! Adekunle Adesoji won the men’s 100 metres T12 with a time of 11.07s, while compatriot Eriyo Etinosa claimed Bronze in the same race after returning a time of 11.43s.
In the same vein, Njideka Iyiazi inspired a 1-2 for Nigeria in the women’s Shot put (seated) which she won with a throw of 6.78m as Virginia Ohagwu followed with a distance of 6.08m.
Olusoji Fasuba raced to a Silver medal in the men’s 100m which was won by Jamaica’s Asafa Powell in 10.03s. Fasuba clocked 10.11s in 2nd place as Trinidad and Tobago’s Marc Burns followed with 10.17s.
Otonye Iworima also leapt to a Silver medal in the women’s Triple Jump event where she recorded a distance of 13.53m, while Vivian Chukwuemeka had to settle for Silver in the women’s Shot put with 18.75m.
The quartet of Kudirat Akhigbe, Joy Eze, Folashade Abugan and Christiana Epukhon won Bronze in the women’s 4x400m (3:31.83) as Vitalis Lanshima also won a medal of the same colour in the men’s 200m T46 where he posted a time of 23.16s.
