After her victories in Marrakech and Durban, Ese Brume added another GOLD medal to her accolades as she leaped the farthest to claim another victory in the final of the women’s Long Jump at the 2018 African Championships taking place in Asaba.
Brume’s fifth round jump of 6.83m was all she needed to clinch the victory on the day, making her the first athlete to win three consecutive Long Jump GOLD medals at the African Championships. The mark also ensured that she equalled her Personal Best (PB) in the event, a mark which she had previously achieved in 2016.
Like Enekwechi in the Shot Put yesterday, all five legal jumps of Brume (6.50m, 6.74m, 6.46m, 6.83m, 6.80m) bettered that of her opponents, which basically emphasized her dominance in the event in the last four years. Precious Okoronkwor narrowly missed out on a medal as she placed 5th, jumping a distance of 6.09m.
In the Discus throw, Chioma Onyekwere was a class apart from the rest of her opponents as her best throw of 58.09m was enough for her to win GOLD.
The victory not only sees Onyekwere improve on the Bronze medal she won in Durban two years ago, it also creates a new PB for as her previous mark of 54.43 now becomes redundant.
Her compatriot Chinwe Okoro threw a distance of 57.37m to settle for the Silver medal for the second consecutive championships.
