African Championships and African Games Champions Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume were the stand out athletes for Team Nigeria on Day 9 of the ongoing IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, as both athletes sailed past their Heats in their respective events with aplomb.
Amusan was the first on the track for Nigeria as she competed in Heat 5 of the women’s 100m Hurdles. The Commonwealth Games Champion laid down the gauntlet with a blistering 12.48s Personal Best (PB) run to win her Heat.
For Brume, it was a tale of saving her energy for the final, as she burst beyond the qualification mark of 6.75m to register a mark of 6.89m in her first attempt, finishing first in her group and second overall.
Elsewhere, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi put up a good show in the final of the men’s Shot Put, but his best throw of 21.18m wasn’t enough to see him into the medal position, placing 8th in the overall standings. US Joe Kovacs set a new Championship Record (CR) to clinch the win.
Finally, Nigeria’s women 4x400m team made up of the quartet of Blessing Oladoye, Patience Okon George, Abike Egbeniyi and Favour Ofili, did not qualify for the final of the event after they placed 8th with a time of 3:35.90.
