The 2021 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, slatedĀ  to hold between March 17-19 has again been postponed till 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in a statement released by the sport’s global governing body, World Athletics.

The event which was originally meant to hold from March 13-15, 2020 had first been postponed for a 12-month period due to the outbreak and to curb the spread of the virus.

“While we have been liaising with the organising committee and the Chinese Athletics Association to evaluate the staging over the past few weeks, given the current global situation, there is still significant uncertainty about the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the early part of 2021,” World Athletics said in the released statement.

“For the safety of our athletes and technical officials, we must duly consider the risks in bringing a large group of people to attend the event under the pandemic situation and fully respect and carry out the pandemic prevention policy of the host country,” they further added.

However, an agreement has been reached by World Athletics with the organizers to hold the event a year after the 2022 World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
