Team Delta have emerged the overall best team in the tennis event at the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin, with a total of five medals consisting two GOLD, two Silver and one Bronze.
In spite of the harsh weather conditions in Benin, Hemery Calvin of Team Delta was unbeatable throughout the competition, defeating Team Imo’s Uche Oparaoji 6-1,6-2 in the final to claim the GOLD medal in the men’s singles and didn’t drop a set all competition.
The French-born player later combined with Mary Tenu Micheals to clinch another GOLD medal with a 5-7,6-4,10-8 victory in the mixed doubles final against Team Oyo’s Babalola Abdulmumini and Sarah Adegoke.
In the women’s singles, Anu Aiyegbusi, who had earlier won GOLD for Team Edo alongside Airhuwunde Osariemen in the women’s doubles, retired due to exhaustion while trailing 2-5 in the first set of the women’s final, thereby handing the GOLD medal to Team Oyo’s Adegoke.
There was victory for Team Oyo in the men’s doubles courtesy of Babalola Abdulmumini and Owolabi Taiwo over Team Imo’s Chima Micheal and Uche Oparaoji to cap Team Oyo’s impressive outing in Tennis at the festival.
