Nigeria’s wait for a medal at the ongoing Toyo Olympics as its only hope on Day 10 of action, Enoch Adegoke, came up short in the men’s 100m final.
Adegoke, who had earlier stormed to a new Personal Best (PB) of 9.98s in the Heats, ran well in the semis to clock 10.00 to make it as one of the fastest qualifiers.
Racing in the final, the National Sports Festival Champion gave it all, but with 50m to go, he pulled up with an injury to end his race. Regardless, he became the first Nigerian to make the men’s 100m Olympic final since Davidson Ezenwa’s feat at the Atlanta 1996 games.
Earlier on the track, African Games and Commonwealth Games women’s 100m Champion, Tobi Amusan breezed into the final in 12.62 to become the first Nigerian since Glory Alozie at Sydney 2000 to qualify for the 100m Hurdles final at the Olympics. Her race comes up by 3:50 am on August 2nd.
Nigeria’s other medal hopeful, Ese Brume didn’t have much difficulty in qualifying for the women’s Long Jump final, as she leaped to a distance of 6.76m, 1cm ahead of the automatic qualifying mark. The final comes up on August 3rd.
