National Record holder in the women’s Discus Chioma Onyekwere successfully defended her African Championships title on Day 3 of competition at the biennial competition despite recording only two valid throws in the course of her campaign.
She was fouled on her first two attempts, then her Discus then hit the ground at 58.18m on her third attempt. She then missed her fourth throw, and then improved on her previous mark by 1cm which was enough to give her the GOLD as she subsequently missed her final throw.
This is Onyekwere’s fourth African Championships medal since 2016 when she first represented the country. She claimed Bronze in both the Shot put and Discus in Durban, and followed with GOLD in the Discus in Asaba. She’s also the reigning African Games Champion in the event.
Nigeria presented three throwers in the event in Mauritius, inspiring Obiageri Amechi to snatch Bronze with a distance of 54.15m in her debut appearance for Nigeria. Silver went to Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie with a throw of 54.44m.
Team Nigeria’s third entrant in the event, Princess Kara, also recorded only two valid throws and had to settle for 5th with her best mark of 51.15m.
