As the season progresses, more scorching times are being attained by Nigerian athletes abroad who keep improving on their Personal Bests (PB) and Season’s Bests (SB) week after week in the quest of achieving the World Championships standard.
Commonwealth Games and World Championships finalist, Ruth Usoro ignited her outdoor season on a winning note at the Miramar Invitational in Florida last weekend. The National Triple Jump Record holder leaped to a wind-aided 6.82m (+2.5m/s) to take the win in the women’s Long Jump.
Meanwhile, African Record holder in the Long Jump, Ese Brume opened her outdoor campaign with the 400m, finishing 4th in her heat with a time of 57.37s.
Over at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium, her brother Godson Brume started his outdoor season with a promising 10.13s to win the men’s 100m at the Lloyd Willis Invitational.
Ella Onojuvwevwo clocked a decent PB of 52.52s to finish overall 1st in the women’s 400m.
At the Joe Meaker Classic and Multi, Jerry Jakpa eventually got into the swing of things as he dashed to times of 10.36s and 20.78s respectively to finish 8th and 2nd in the men’s 100m and 200m respectively.
Jakpa was a part of the West Texas A&M quartet that finished 5th with a sub-39 (38.92s) when he ran the second leg at the Texas Relays.
Ese Awusa stopped the tape in a PB of 13.40s in the women’s 100m hurdles, shaving off 0.53 from her initial PB set last season to take the win.
Miracle Thompson also won the women’s 100m hurdles with a wind-aided 13.50s at the Woodman Classics.
Commonwealth Games Champion, Chioma Onyekwere bettered her SB from her previous outing to a decent 60.79m in the women’s Discus Throw at the Triton Invitational.
