In a tightly contested race where 7 out 9 men went under 10s, Godson Brume got edged to a second-place finish in the 100m at the NCAA Championships.
Heading into the finals as the second-fastest athlete from the qualification round, Brume was one of the pre-race favourites in the men’s 100m.
Fresh off his win in the 4×100m relay—an event his school (LSU) dominated throughout the season—Brume was hoping to make it two wins at Austin, Texas.
Brume got out quite late in the blocks but as usual, started picking up his strides as the race progressed. In what happened to be a shocking finish, Courtney Linsdey from Texas Tech from the far end managed to dip on the line edging Brume by one-hundredth of a second in 9.89s to 9.90s. Shaun Maswanganyi was 3rd in 9.91s.
Compatriots Udodi Onwuzurike and Favour Ashe finished 6th and 8th with times of 9.98s and 10.02s respectively.
Asides from the time being a Personal Best (PB) for him, it also makes him the third-fastest Nigerian in the all-time list.
