Another huge encounter awaits the Super Falcons of Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Thursday, as they look to build on their impressive first group match, this time facing the co-hosts in Brisbane.
Tournament co-hosts Australia will welcome Nigeria at the Suncorp Stadium as the tussle for a spot in the knockout stages gets even more intriguing.
Nigeria began their campaign earning a hard-fought but deserving point in a goalless draw against Canada. The Falcons’ goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was the heroine in the game, making a brilliant save to deny Canada’s captain Christine Sinclair from the spot.
Australia in their first game, snatched a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland, with Stephanie Carley’s decisive penalty early in the second half helping them claim all three points.
Against Australia on Thursday, Randy Waldrum’s girls will be hoping to improve on the staunch defensive compactness they pulled off against the reigning Olympic Champions on matchday one. A win could get the African giants to top spot in the Group B.
TEAM NEWS
Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala is a doubt for the clash after she picked up a knock in the game against Canada. However, the 29-year-old forward Desire Oparanozie is now available for selection after she was previously left out of the opener due to injury.
The duo: dazzling forward Rasheedat Ajibade and midfielder Halimatu Ayinde are now back in contention for the game after missing out against Canada due to suspension.
Meanwhile, Australia star Sam Kerr is still out injured for the game as a double injury blow hits the Matildas with Mary Fowler and Aivi Luik also out of the Thursday clash in Brisbane.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The clash will be the second meeting between both sides at the FIFA World Cup tournament.
Their only previous encounter was at the 2015 edition of the Mundial in Canada.
Australia claimed a 2-0 win in the group stage in that game.
