It was an impressive outing for Nigeria’s contingent on Day 5 of the World Athletics Championships as most of her athletes progressed to the next phase of their respective events.
Defending World Champion and World Record Holder Tobi Amusan qualified for her third consecutive World Championships final as she overcame a slow start to win Heat 2 of the 100m hurdles semifinals in 12.56s ahead of Ackera Nugent of Jamaica who led the race in the early stages to place 2nd in 12.60s.
Amusan is the second Nigerian after Ese Brume to qualify for a final in Budapest so far.
African Indoor Record Holder Favour Ofili and National Champion Alaba Akintola progressed to the semis of the women’s and men’s 200m respectively.
Ofili qualified as the fastest non-automatic qualifier with 22.66s after placing 4th in her heat while Akintola got an automatic qualification spot after finishing 3rd in his heat in 20.54s.
African Champion Oyesade Olatoye did not make it past the qualification round of the women’s Hammer throw. She placed 15th in Group B with a distance of 66.92m, which ranked her 30th overall.
