The Season 2 Grand Final for MTN CHAMPS set to hold from Tuesday, April 30th, to Friday, 3rd May, is expected to throw up lots of fireworks as the best athletes selected across the first three locations for 2024 (Asaba, Ibadan and Jos) converge at the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar, Cross River State, to fight for a place into the MoC Athletics Academy sponsored by MTN.
In an unprecedented move, Team MVP will present a record 7 teams, up from 5 Teams presented in Season 1, with the added innovation of also having Team A and Team B in categories with the most talent discovered!
Here’s the total number of 70 Athletes listed (61 Confirmed and 9 to be confirmed by Sunday 28th April latest), and the breakdown of the 7 Team MVPs:
– (1) Cadet Girls ‘Team MVP’ (7 Athletes)
– (2) Cadet Boys ‘Team MVP’ (5 Athletes)
– (3) Youth Girls ‘Team MVP A’ (7 Athletes)
– (4) Youth Girls ‘Team MVP B’ (8 Athletes)
– (5) Youth Boys ‘Team MVP’ (7 Athletes)
– (6) Junior ‘Team MVP A’ (18 Athletes – 8 girls & 10 boys)
– (7) Junior ‘Team MVP B’ (18 Athletes – 8 girls & 10 boys)
Team MVP’s 70 Athletes will contest the Calabar Grand Final with over 2,000 Athletes across Nigeria, to make the final shortlist of 20 Athletes to be considered at the end of the Championship to join ‘Team MTN’ at the MoC Athletics Academy in Lagos for 1 year – eventually the 10 of them will be selected to join the Top 10 from Season 1 at the Academy!
Other interesting stats include the fact that the 70 Athletes are made up of 50 Sprinters (100m, 200m, 110m Hurdles), 16 Quater-Milers (400m, with some also doing 200m or 800m), 2 Middle Distancers (1,500m) and 2 Field Event Athletes (a Long Jumper and a Thrower who competes in all the Throws offered – Discus, Shot Put and Javelin), hence covering the full breadth of Track & Field Events while recognizing that MoC Academy is largely recruiting for Sprinters & Quarter-Milers currently!
While 9 of the current 70 Team MVP Athletes are yet to be confirmed available to accept the invitation (and must do so by Sunday 28th April as stated above), 5 of the total 75 invited Athletes were unavailable, either because of impending WAEC Exams or due to injury – they are welcome to try out again at our future Events and will be invited for future opportunities to compete when the opportunity arises!
