Only one Team Nigeria athlete was in action on Day 5 of the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.
National champion, Tosin Oke competed in the men’s Triple Jump event and booked his place in the final coming up in the evening session of Day 6 events in Beijing.
The 2010 Commonwealth Champion had his work cut out in the qualification series. He fouled in his attempt, but got on the board with his second leap of 14.70m.
He needed to produce something big with his final attempt or be eliminated, and he got through with 16.74m, taking one of the last seven spots available in the final.
With Cuba’s Pedro Pablo Pichardo and America’s Christian Taylor comfortably scaling past 17m, having both gone past 18m even, Oke will have to produce a top performance to medal in the Triple Jump. Both Taylor and Pichardo are doing incredible things at the moment, but Oke will have to match or even surpass his Personal Best of 17.23m to stand a chance.
Blessing Okagbare was the other Nigerian athlete expected to compete in the heats of the women’s 200m, but the Commonwealth Champion did not start (DNS) as she reportedly has a hamstring injury.
