Amusan won two continental GOLD medals in 2015

Oluwatobiloba Amusan further underlined what a star she is becoming as she won the women’s 100m Hurdles title at the just concluded Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in the United States on Saturday.

It was a win many anticipated, especially Nigerian fans after she ran the fastest time of all heats on Friday to make the final in 13.27s. She lowered that time in the final, coming through the barriers in 13.12s to win the event for the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP).

Payton Stumbaugh finished 2nd in 13.18s as Ebony Morrison placed 3rd in 13.34s. Amusan’s compatriot Mobolaji Adeosun, who ran the second fastest time in the heats, finished 5th with a time of 13.43s.

With Amusan’s form that has seen her win most of her races (indoor and outdoor) this season, including running the 4th fastest time in the world, she is definitely one to keep an eye on as a medal prospect this year.

In the women’s 200m Final B, 2015 African Games Silver Medallist, Ngozi Onwumere finished 2nd with a time of 23.66s to rank 5th overall in the final standings. Puerto Rico’s Celiangely Morales won the race in 23.61s as Kineke Alexander finished 3rd in 23.88s.

Natasha Hastings won Final A in 22.84s, with Ashley Spencer 2nd in 23.50s, same time as Kelly-Ann Baptiste who was 3rd.

Meanwhile in the men’s Shot Put, Nigeria’s Record Holder, Stephen Mozia looked to have shaken off his World Indoor Championships disappointment with victory on Saturday.

Mozia’s third throw of 20.14m was the winning mark, as he had one other valid throw (his first attempt), fouling in the other four, but he had done enough to secure victory. Interestingly, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, of Nigerian descent but competing for USA, finished 2nd with 19.35m, and Jacob Thormaehlen 3rd with 19.27m.

Athletics coverage was a discovery, having to move away from regularly writing about Football. Although it was initially daunting, but now being an authority in it makes the past effort worthwhile. From travelling on the same international flight with Nigerian athletes, to knowing you could easily interview: World Record holder Tobi Amusan, then Ese Brume, I have cut my teeth in this beat earning the trust of Athletics sources.
