Nigeria’s Doreen Amata continued her winning streak as she last weekend won the High Jump event at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, USA.
Amata’s winning mark of 1.88m saw her beat Nicole Greene who was 2nd at 1.78m, and Ann Dudley 3rd after clearing her best jump of 1.75m.
Having passed the first two jumps of 1.62m and 1.67m respectively, Amata opened her jump at 1.72m, further passing 1.75m and returning at 1.78m, failing her first attempt but scaling the height at her second time of trying. She passed 1.81m, and didn’t fail any attempt at 1.84m and 1.88m. However, she didn’t clear any attempt at 1.92m.
This is Amata’s second win in a month, further improving from her 1.86m win at the Tiger Track Classic meet in Auburn, Alabama. Having moved to USA for the coming season, Amata has been competing at different meets there to put her in shape to compete for honours this year.
Amata was not the only Nigerian in action in Atlanta; Stephen Mozia competed in the Discus and narrowly missed out on winning by two centimeters, finishing 2nd with a throw of 60.43m.
Mozia led from his first throw, and followed it up with 60.17m in this third attempt, but Tavis Bailey left it late, going a distance of 60.45m in his 5th attempt to snatch the win, with the Nigerian drawing a foul in his last attempt. Kevin Farley finished 3rd with a mark of 53.08m.
Having done the double in Texas on April 1, Mozia is currently ranked 31st in the world in the Discus with a mark of 62.20m, and 12th in Shot Put with a mark of 20.14m.
Meanwhile in the women’s 400m Hurdles, former national champion Ajoke Odumosu Did Not Finish (DNF) her race, having competed in Heat 1.
