Gloria Asumnu last weekend won the women’s 100m at the Tom Tellez Invitational held at the Carl Lewis International Complex in the University of Texas, Houston, USA.
Asumnu ran the fastest time of the two heats, coming through in 11.34s (+2.2) to take Heat 1 and win overall. Tameka Williams finished 2nd overall with a time of 11.36s (+2.2) as Debbie Ferguson was 3rd in 11.41s.
Many other Nigerian athletes also competed in the 100m. 2015 4x200m GOLD medallist, Dominque Duncan finished 3rd in Heat 1 and placed 9th in the overall standing.
Her teammate at last year’s World Relays, Christy Udoh finished 5th in Heat 2 and 7th overall. 200m African Games Silver medallist, Ngozi Onwumere also took part in the 100m and placed 10th overall having finished 7th in Heat 2.
However she did better in the 200m. Onwumere who recently ran a new Personal Best (PB) of 23.22s finished 3rd in Heat 3, placing 5th overall with a time of 23.83s (+3.0) . With the outdoor season now in full swing, many more Nigerian athletes are competing across various meets around the globe as they aim to attain qualification standards for the African Athletics Championships and Olympic Games in Rio.
11.34 ,The time is too slow, Elaine Thompson is running 10.71, Torie Bowie 10.80, Dafne Schippers in consistent form. I fear this Olympics will just be like London 2012
